When you are actively involved in an artistic project and you see it through to the end, to where you can finally see your finished project, you feel something special. It might be a new feeling or you might have felt it before. But, it is definitely a special feeling. It’s a feeling of accomplishment. It’s a feeling of success. One of art’s great benefits is what it does as a whole to the artist. Art builds the artist’s self-esteem and it greatly enhances quality of life in many forms.
Walking through the process of creating a work of art, you start with nothing. You might not even have an idea. You might just want to produce something and have absolutely no idea where to begin. Some artists just start with a color and they begin. Painting the entire canvas one whole color because that’s the way they feel, some artists have a strategy to work through the problem with no plan. Having no plan is a scary thought for most people. But to the artist, it’s like jumping out of an airplane and making a parachute on the way down. They feel a sense of exuberance. It’s a challenge and they love it.
But, some people need a plan. These are the people who mostly think with the left side of their brain. They need to know the beginning, middle and end and they would like to know them in that exact order. These people don’t necessarily lack self-esteem, but they are afraid to take risks when they don’t know all the factors involved. What they need is to feel the rush of jumping out of an airplane and landing with a work of art out of their furthest imagination.
Once they get an idea of what they want to accomplish with this blank canvas staring at them with no mercy, they begin to work hard on getting the canvas to become more and more like the image in their minds. They adjust this and adjust that. Finally, their plan is coming together and they are starting to feel more secure about it as their artwork approaches completeness.
That’s the magical process of art. It opens our eyes. It makes us see. It makes us see ourselves for who we really are and what we really can accomplish. Once you see how good you can actually be, you start to realize that there is nothing you can’t accomplish. That’s self-esteem. That’s what art does for you.
